Original 'Nothing Compares 2 U' gets a special release, plus more Prince-related activity

photo: The Prince Estate/Nancy Bundt
The Prince Estate, in collaboration with Warner Bros. Records, has now released the original version of the iconic song "Nothing Compares 2 U".

This previously unreleased version was recorded in 1984, six years before 1990’s classic reimagining by Sinéad O'Connor and before Prince started performing the song live. The track was recorded at the Flying Cloud Drive 'Warehouse' in Eden Prairie by Prince’s long-time engineer Susan Rogers, and originally composed, arranged and performed in its entirety by Prince, aside from the backing vocals by Susannah Melvoin and Paul "St. Paul" Peterson.

Also featured on the original track is saxophone work by Eric Leeds. The new version of the song will be available to stream, to purchase via digital retailers and as two 7” vinyl singles (in picture disk and standard black vinyl formats). Download or stream the track HERE.

As remembered by Michael Howe, long-time industry A&R executive, Prince expert, and the Prince Estate’s official Vault Archivist, “I spotted the 2" multitrack reel in the Vault some weeks back while doing a 1984-era inventory. After retrieving my jaw from the floor, we took the reel upstairs, analyzed it, put it up on the Studer 24 track machine, and digitized it to 24/192. Even our 'faders up' rough mix was compelling enough to indicate that this was something very special indeed.”

Howe continued, “No Prince-penned song performed by another artist has enjoyed more chart success (#1 in over a dozen countries) and overall cultural impact than Sinead O'Connor's 1990 recording, so hearing the song in its original context performed in its entirety by the author makes it particularly noteworthy.”

The song is accompanied by a video featuring never before seen rehearsal footage of Prince & The Revolution practicing their choreography in that same Eden Prairie warehouse during the same summer of 1984. Captured for Prince as a part of his rehearsal process, the footage is presented for the very first time in a video directed by Andrea Gelardin and Ruth Hogben. The video offers a glimpse into Prince’s total commitment to his art and its emotional impact, even when no audience is present. Watch the video HERE.

After the successful launch of the Prince HitNRun online pop-up store last November, the Prince Estate is bringing back the concept(, where the limited edition, picture disk vinyl will be sold exclusively. In addition to the limited edition picture disk vinyl, fans will also be able to purchase a variety of official Prince merchandise, including pieces that draw from his iconic Dirty Mind and Lovesexy eras. The black vinyl 7” will be available for pre-order from major physical retailers and will be released on Friday May 25.

The Prince Estate has also launched a new site for fans to showcase what Prince means to them. Prince2Me ( is an interactive fan experience that explores what Prince means, individually and collectively to his fans. The Prince Estate has also announced that this will be the first of many online experiences to come, each will shine a new light on his artistry.

When fans visit thePrince2Me site they will be able to craft their own message using Prince vocabulary, an array of images and videos provided by the Estate. Once a fan creates their desired message they can share their post across social media and spark the conversation of who Prince is to them. Fans who use Twitter to share their Prince2Me messages using #Prince2Me or #NothingCompares2U will be able to activate an exclusive Prince Love Symbol Twitter emoji.

In addition to the Prince2Me site, the Estate has launched an immersive annotated discography website highlighting the incomparable breadth and depth of Prince’s recorded catalogue. Featuring audio previews, photos, videos, quotes and editorial commentary, the discography site provides a rich platform for fans old and new to immerse themselves in the creative genius ofPrince. John Mellencamp Chicago concert due on home video next month

On May 11, John Mellencamp fans will get a deeper look at the artist when Eagle Rock Entertainment puts out Plain Spoken: From The Chicago Theatre on DVD+CD, Blu-ray+CD, and digital formats.

Long-awaited new English Beat album details revealed

I saw the band live last year in Riverside and Irvine, Calif. and the one or two new songs that were played sounded solid. And his toaster King Schascha was impressive as well. Can't wait to hear the album...

The English Beat featuring Dave Wakeling have announced their first new studio album since 1982. Scheduled for release on June 15, Here We Go Love includes 13 songs (see track listing below). It was made over the last two years between tours.

On "The One And Only," Wakeling examines “the Donald Trump in all of us. It is too easy for us to just point fingers.” Besides music performed by the live band, there are special guests like Roddy "Radiation" Byers of The Specials and The Skabilly Rebels, Train guitarist Luis Maldonado and backing vocalists Durga McBroom, Kevin Williams and Jelani Jones.

Wakeling even sought input from The English Beat’s late saxophonist Saxa, who had a tendon injury, but still hummed some saxophone melodies which Wakeling incorporated into the album to maintain a taste of his musical flavor.

Track listing:

1. How can you stand there?
2. The one and the only
3. Redemption time
4. If killing worked
5. Here we go love
6. Never die

News on Glen Phillips from Toad the Wet Sprocket

Compass Records Group, home of Colin Hay, the Infamous Stringdusters, Nicki Bluhm and others, is proud to welcome Glen Phillips (Toad the Wet Sprocket) to their roster.

On May 4, Compass will deliver the commercial release of Phillips’ introspective, intimate 2016 solo album, SWALLOWED BY THE NEW, with the addition of a bonus track co-written with Lori McKenna,“Nobody’s Gonna Get Hurt.” The song recently premiered at No Depression. Listen to "Nobody's Gonna Get Hurt"

“Lori McKenna and I wrote ‘Nobody’s Gonna Get Hurt’ at her home just outside of Boston," Phillips says. "I’d been reading and listening to a lot of David Whyte and was taken by his assertion that heartache is the inevitable byproduct of loving anything deeply, a sign of a life well lived instead of something to be avoided. I came in with the title and an idea that the song should be entirely lies. Lori jumped in and we finished it all in under two hours. That was a good day.”

"I’m excited to be partnering with Compass Records for the broad release of SWALLOWED BY THE NEW," Phillips says. “I’m proud of this piece of work and am excited to have their expertise and support in helping it be heard by a broader audience."

SWALLOWED BY THE NEW will be available worldwide on CD, vinyl and all digital service providers followed by tours in the US and abroad. It’s the most intensely personal album of Phillips' career, reflecting his mastery for converting raw emotion into sound. Taking on life’s difficult transitions -- the album was written following his divorce from his wife of 23 years -- Phillips delivers some of his most vulnerable songs to date.

“This album was written to give myself a set of tools to deal with transitions that big and to understand that just because something hurts doesn't mean it's injurious," Phillips told Billboard. "It can hurt, but it can also be a sign of growing and learning to allow change and have some fundamental trust that what's happening is what needs to happen.”

A new album on the way from Jim James of My Morning Jacket

photo: Justin Close
My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James announced his third solo album Uniform Distortion, will arrive June 29 via ATO Records. First track "Just a Fool" premiered through NPR's All Things Considered.

While flipping through the pages of The Last Whole Earth Catalogue, a resource that was in 1971 basically the internet before the internet, Jim James stumbled upon a distorted photo of "The Illuminated Man' by Duane Michals.

Immediately moved by the photo, he asked for permission to to use the image as the album cover of Uniform Distortion. The first request to Michals was rejected. In hopes of changing his mind, James wrote a letter to Michals personally and was ultimately allowed to use the image.

The letter, which sheds some light on the album and James current state of mind, reads in full below:

"hello duane- your piece "the illuminated man" was used in "the last whole earth catalogue" in 1971. i wasnt even born yet. i was born in 1978...but i found my copy of "the last whole earth catalogue" about 6 months ago in a thrift store and it blew my mind. i have been feeling increasingly overwhelmed by the speed of technology and its place in our lives and here was this beautiful book/catalogue from the past showing me me all these beautiful things and amazing images to help one learn different ways to look at the world... or "get off the grid?" funny they had no idea back then just how crazy "the grid" would get. or did they?

so i am trying to put down my phone... use the computer and social media less... and just focus on real life and the people i love and my art. of course i am not fully "off the grid" because i am sending you this email in hopes of you changing your mind about letting me use your image as it appeared in "the last whole earth catalogue" in 1971 because when i saw it on the page there it spoke to me so deeply of how my head feels like it is exploding with the amount of information we are forced to consume on a daily basis and how that information is so DISTORTED there is almost no longer any tangible truth. the name of my new record is "UNIFORM DISTORTION" because i feel like there is this blanket distortion on society/media and the way we gather our "news" and important information...and more and more of us are feeling lost and looking for new ways out of this distortion and back to the truth...and finding hope in places like the desert where i write this email to you now...finding hope in the land and in the water and in old books offering new ideas and most importantly in each other and love.

i feel like there was a reason i found "the last whole earth catalogue" and there was a reason your art spoke to me... and i really think it would speak to others who would see it exploding out at them illuminating from the record store shelf or the glow of their phone or computer screen and feel its organic mind blowing distortion connect with this new music.

i also like the natural "distortion" that time and the pulp of the paper meeting the ink from "the last whole earth catalogue" add to your original image and that is why i am asking your permission to use this "distorted" version of your original beautiful image.

i hope you are well and thanks for listening-
jim james"

Record Store Day '18 news: The Alarm to skip across continents

Sounds like a very ambitious undertaking from Peters, who never shies away from a challenge. Can't wait to hear the latest music. Read below for the latest...

To celebrate this year's Record Store Day (April 21), THE ALARM's MIKE PETERS will undertake a massive feat: a three-stop transcontinental trip within 24 hours, hitting record stores in London, New York and Los Angeles.

For RSD, the band will issue a limited edition eight-song EP, WHERE THE TWO RIVERS MEET. It's the latest release from the Welsh band who've had 17 Top 50 UK with over five million in album sales worldwide in their 35+ year career.

This is an official exclusive release for World Record Store Day 2018. "I'm so proud of the new music that is being made in the name of The Alarm right here and now," says singer, songwriter and guitarist MIKE PETERS.

Born out of the intense Blood Red Viral Black sessions (2017), the new release stands alongside some of the best work to carry the hallmark of The Alarm. It is a vital piece of music that features an electric contribution from Billy Duffy of The Cult and songs that will only be available in this limited edition format for #RSD18.

The day will kick off with a sold-out listening party in the UK hosted by Diverse Music in Newport, Wales before PETERS crosses the Atlantic for stops in New York at Looney Tunes Records in Babylon, Long Island and Los Angeles at Fingerprints Records in Long Beach.

Armed with an acoustic guitar and a camera, creating an "on the run" video, PETERS adds, "It's probably a good idea to make sure your favorite Alarm t-shirt is clean and ready to be worn on Record Store Day!" As PETERS explained on THE ALARM's website, "the 24-hour Transatlantic Tour marks the start of a very exciting new era for all of us in the Alarm community, and I hope each and every fan will enter into the spirit of the times and step forward to take part in these new Alarm adventures."

To commemorate the day, the band have created a limited-edition t-shirt that is available for pre-order now. Throughout the day on April 21, the band is asking all Alarm fans to take a picture wearing their favorite Alarm t-shirt sharing the photo on social media using the #RSD18thealarm and #RSD18 hashtags. Those who share their photos online (and using the appropriate hashtags) will automatically be entered into an online Alarm lottery that will entitle the winner to a unique and special 7" vinyl single that will recorded and pressed by PETERS at the beginning of the day. The winning entry will be announced by PETERS following his final appearance of the day.

Next up, PETERS and the ALARM are prepping a new album that's due out this June and world tour, which kicks off June 1 in Europe with North American dates to follow. PETERS promises "that we will blow the roof, the doors and the fences down at each and every gig."

Stay tuned for additional details on the album and tour.

In stores now: Cold War Kids live album from Georgia

Cold War Kids' Audience – a live, greatest hits album, is available at all digital partners. Fans can pre-order Audience on vinyl, which features three exclusive bonus tracks, and CD today at

Recorded at The Georgia Theatre in Athens, GA on September 24, 2017, Audience takes its title from a song that appeared on Cold War Kids’ 2010 EP, Behave Yourself. The career-spanning live set, available now on Capitol Records, also features key songs from each of the band’s six studio albums, including “We Used to Vacation,” “Hang Me Up To Dry” and ‘Hospital Beds”from Cold War Kids’ 2006 debut, Robbers & Cowards, and “Miracle Mile and “Bottled Affection” from 2013’s Dear Miss Lonelyhearts.

The band’s most recent releases are represented with “All This Could Be Yours” and the Gold-certified, Alternative Songs chart topper “First” from 2014’s Hold My Home plus “So Tied Up,” and “Restless” and “Can We Hang On?”which originally appeared on LA Divine, the band’s 2017 sixth studio album. See below for track listing.

Says front man Nathan Willett, “What makes Cold War Kids special is our live show. The energy that we have on stage every night is what we try to capture in the studio. But in some ways it’s just never gonna be as good as it is on stage when we have an Audience to play for. Many songs -especially from the first few albums - have evolved so much from over 10 years of performing them (over 3,000 shows !?). For me personally - these versions are just so much more raw and emotional. We had hundreds of recordings from live shows. But after playing one night at the Georgia Theater in Athens we decided that the truest way to show who we are is to release this show exactly how it was this one special night. Thanks for coming out. See you in the audience.”

Watch the video for a live version of Cold War Kids’ new single, “Can We Hang On?” HERE. Willett describes the track as “a hopeful love song that looks back with nostalgia on the good old days but is uncertain about the future.”

Tickets are now sale now for Cold War Kids’ North American headline tour, which launches May 21 at The Rustic in Dallas, TX. The band will also perform at numerous 2018 festivals, including Hangout, LaurelLive and Firefly. See below for itinerary or visit

Cold War Kids are Nathan Willett, Matt Maust, Joe Plummer, Matthew Schwartz, and David Quon. Formed in 2004 in Fullerton, CA, the band has sold more than 800,000 adjusted albums, over two million singles, and racked up over 200 million streams to date. Released in April 2017, LA Divine has sold over 100,000 adjusted albums globally and racked up more than 100 million streams.

Neko Case news

photo: Shore Fire Media
While recording her new album 'Hell-On' -- and with the finish line in sight -- Neko Case received a surreal 3am call informing her that her house was burning and would likely be completely destroyed. The fire had started in the barn, where she kept an assortment of belongings, from artwork to old pianos. A friend had managed to get the dogs to safety. After the flames jumped to the house, her home was engulfed, too.

A few hours later, she went into a studio in Stockholm and laid down the vocals for the galloping, resilient "Bad Luck," singing lines she had written long ago that were now more apropos than ever: "It's not as bad as I thought it would be / but it's still pretty bad luck."

Neko Case has released "Bad Luck," the latest single from her new album 'Hell-On,' out June 1 on Anti-. Listen to it below.

YouTube /Spotify / Apple Music / Amazon:

Case is now stoic about the fire. "If somebody burned your house down on purpose, you'd feel so violated. But when nature burns your house down, you can't take it personally." The month before the blaze, Hurricane Harvey had slammed into Texas and flooded Houston. Her home burned just as Puerto Rico was plunged into a nightmare by Hurricane Maria and wildfires incinerated California. "In the big picture, my house burning was so unimportant," she says. "So many people lost so much more: lives and lives and lives."

Produced by Neko Case, 'Hell-On' was partially
co-produced by Bjorn Yttling of Peter Bjorn & John in Stockholm, Sweden where she mixed the 12 track album with Lasse Mårtén. It features performances by Beth Ditto, Mark Lanegan, k.d. Lang, AC Newman, Eric Bachmann, Kelly Hogan, Doug Gillard, Laura Veirs, Joey Burns and more.

Case goes more in-depth:

I am a music producer, songwriter, and musician. I just finished a record called 'Hell-On' with a cast of talented musicians, techs, label folks and friends.

What I want you to know about me isn't too much, nor do I want to over talk it. What you take away on your own, as a listener is most important. I worked really hard and I was present for every second of this project. Producing a record is a huge task and there were times I was deep in the weeds, but that is normal for a record that takes a year plus. The weeds aren't so bad. There were a lot of break-through moments, belly-laughs, sleepless nights and grubby, shiny jeans. In the end it was all worth it and I am so proud of how it turned out, and I am so grateful to have worked with such dedicated, giving artists to make it happen.

There were a few challenges during the making of this record from small (scheduling difficulties, and occasional miscommunication) to large (my house burning down while I was overseas.) But none of them are the story of this recording, the songs are the story. They are my best self. They are everything I've worked for since I was a kid, whether I knew it or not.

I write songs from a feeling of solidarity with folks who feel alone or isolated, I think I'm trying to comfort people in this way. It's not a forceful way rather "No commitment necessary;" take it if you want it, take it as you can.

My style is odd, I don't know what genre this is. I don't have a pretty voice or a trained voice, and I am constantly disappointed that I don't have a "tough" voice, no matter how hard I practice, but it's mine, and for all its loud, heavy-handed, nasal, vibrato-less qualities I accept it. The closest sound I have found to compare it to is Bulgarian Folk singing. My Eastern ancestors could have been proud of me a century ago? I could have been a droning "caller of wasps" perhaps? I just invented that job, I like the sound of it.

The songs are who I believe myself to be and that will change, but for now that's how it is and I'm very satisfied with that.

Neko Case will hit the road this summer, including dates with Ray LaMontagne and at Sasquatch Festival.

Andrew Bird + orchestra headed to several American cities

photo: Tanner Morris
Andrew Bird is set for a run of orchestral tour dates in select U.S. cities this fall, performing alongside the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, the Kansas City Symphony and the National Symphony Orchestra.

The final shows of the tour in Washington, DC mark Bird’s Kennedy Center debut, where alongside the National Symphony Orchestra he will perform with musician, composer and orchestrator Gabriel Kahane, who has conceived innovative orchestrations of Bird’s songs.

Additionally, Bird will co-headline three dates in August with Punch Brothers. See below for full tour dates and for more info visit

Prior to the fall orchestral performances, this May Bird will perform select songs from his score for the Patagonia-produced film Blue Heart following premiere screening events in New York and Chicago.

The film documents the battle for the largest undammed river in Europe (Albania’s Vjosa), the effort to save the endangered Balkan lynx in Macedonia, and the women of Kruščica, Bosnia and Herzegovina who are spearheading a months-long, 24/7 protest to protect their community’s only source of fresh water. All NYC ticket sales will benefit Riverkeeper, while Chicago ticket sales will benefit Prairie Rivers Network; both are organizations that work to protect natural flowing rivers locally.

Bird also recently scored acclaimed director Lynn Shelton’s new film Outside In, which made its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival. The score received a rave review from Variety, who proclaim, “Having pop iconoclast Andrew Bird as composer was an inspired choice, as his largely acoustic score adds some playful edges to the overall texture,” whileThe Hollywood Reporter praised the “excellent score by Andrew Bird.” The film is out now on iTunes and On Demand everywhere.

Chicago-born, LA-based film score composer, multi-instrumentalist and lyricist, Andrew Bird picked up his first violin at the age of four and spent his formative years soaking up classical repertoire completely by ear. As a teen Bird became interested in a variety of styles including early jazz, country blues and gypsy music, synthesizing them into his unique brand of pop.

Since beginning his recording career in 1997, he has released 14 albums, his most recent being, Echolocations: River, which was recorded ankle deep in the Los Angeles River under The Hyperion Bridge. The instrumental release is the second in a series of short films and recordings documenting site-specific compositions. Performed by Bird and filmed by Tyler Manson in remote and acoustically unique environments, the first installment, Echolocations: Canyon, was released in 2015.

Joseph Arthur and Peter Buck team up for duo album, tour

photo: Dean Karr
Now this sounds like an intriguing collaboration. Can't wait to hear it. Check out the press release below...

Joseph Arthur and Peter Buck of R.E.M. fame will release their debut album, Arthur Buck, on June 15 via New West Records. The 11-song set was produced by Joseph Arthur and mixed by Tchad Blake (U2, Pearl Jam, The Black Keys) with all of its songs co-written by the duo.

The collaboration was established after the pair met up in Mexico near the end of 2017. They wrote eight songs in three days and on the fourth day, performed them for a handful of Baja locals near Buck’s home. Arthur says, “My first thought was, ‘Hey, I’ll get Peter to play acoustic guitar on some of the stuff I’m working on!’ So I started showing him songs. But he was like, ‘That’s cool. Now check this out.’ And he started playing chords and whatnot. So I put my guitar down and began singing over his changes, and it was magical. It was easy. And these great songs just started popping out.”

Since their initial meeting, the pair have been steadily working on their debut with basic tracks being recorded at Type Foundry Studio in Portland, OR with Arthur producing at his studio in Brooklyn, NY.

“It was all new songs, and it was spontaneous,” Buck says. “And the great thing about working that way was that it didn’t have to be anything in particular. It was liberated from any expectation. It was free.”

NPR Music premiered “I Am The Moment”. Hear it HERE. Arthur Buck will be available as an Indie Retail Translucent Blue & Red Split Colored Vinyl Edition, a limited edition Autographed Barnes & Noble Vinyl Variant, Standard Black Vinyl, Compact Disc, and across digital platforms. The album is currently available for pre-order via NEW WEST RECORDS.

The two musicians have a history that stretches back decades; among other pairings, Arthur opened many shows for R.E.M. in the early 2000s, while Buck has backed Arthur on numerous occasions.

Both Arthur and Buck have said that these songs differ from their other recording projects and while speaking with Rolling Stone last month, Buck said “It was really spontaneous and kind of magical in its own way, as [being in Mexico] we were kind of disconnected from everything.”

Arthur added, “All of a sudden it was like I had this musical partner and friend, and that relieved the music of the burden of the self, if that makes sense.” Of his new bandmate, Buck stated, “Joe is going through that searching period we all go through in life. And those experiences he’s having make this a very forward-looking record, lyrically. The music has a questing kind of feel. We were making it up as we went along.”

Tour dates announced shortly.

Elvis Presley, Beatles, Supremes, Temptations on Ed Sullivan Show to get upgraded home video release

From 1948 to 1971, TV’s longest-running prime time variety program, CBS’ “The Ed Sullivan Show,” beamed the world’s biggest stars into the homes of nearly every American household live every Sunday evening.

For musicians of all stripes, performing on the show was the pinnacle of television opportunities, with singular star-making potential. Among the artists vaulted to new heights of stardom via history-making appearances were The Beatles, Elvis Presley, The Temptations, and The Supremes, all of whom returned to “The Ed Sullivan Show” several times after electrifying debut performances on the program.

On May 25, SOFA Entertainment/UMe will release three DVD collections honoring Elvis Presley’s legacy on “The Ed Sullivan Show” and beyond its stage: The 3 Complete Ed Sullivan Shows Starring Elvis Presley (2DVD), which includes all three entire episodes featuring Elvis; JUST ELVIS: All His Ed Sullivan Show Performances (1DVD), featuring just his iconic performances, including his infamous 1957 performance filmed from the waist up; and Elvis: The Great Performances (2DVD), which collects three previously released documentaries featuring appearances on “The Ed Sullivan Show” and dozens of other great Elvis TV and film performances into one DVD collection: Center Stage, The Man And The Music, and From The Waist Up.

In addition, three popular, previously released DVD collections: The Complete Ed Sullivan Shows Starring The Beatles, The Best Of The Supremes On The Ed Sullivan Show, and The Best Of The Temptations On The Ed Sullivan Show have been digitally upgraded from standard definition to high definition video for release by SOFA Entertainment/UMe on May 25.

All six DVD titles are available now for preorder:

The 3 Complete Ed Sullivan Shows Starring Elvis (2DVD):
Just Elvis: All His Ed Sullivan Performances (1DVD):
Elvis: The Great Performances (2DVD):
The 4 Complete Ed Sullivan Shows Starring The Beatles (2DVD):
The Best Of The Supremes On The Ed Sullivan Show (1DVD):
The Best Of The Temptations On The Ed Sullivan Show (1DVD):

The Three Complete Ed Sullivan Shows Starring Elvis Presley presents the three entire “Ed Sullivan Show” episodes with Elvis’s historic performances, from September and October 1956 and January 1957. All 13 of Elvis’ electrifying performances for the program (including medleys) are featured in the 2DVD collection, as well as each show’s additional guests, including comedians Carol Burnett and Señor Wences, actor Charles Laughton, and boxer Sugar Ray Robinson. Special bonus material includes a home movie of a very early Elvis Presley performance in Houston, Texas; Elvis and Ed Sullivan remembered; and home movies of Elvis, his wife Priscilla, and their daughter Lisa Marie.

JUST ELVIS: All His Ed Sullivan Show Performances features all 15 songs from Elvis Presley’s three appearances on the show between September 1956 and January 1957, without the show’s other guests. So explosive and radical were these performances, Elvis’ final “Ed Sullivan Show” appearance had to be filmed from the waist up due to the fears and timidity of CBS’s censors.

Elvis: The Great Performances collects three feature documentary films on two DVDs, exploring the rise, music, personality and presence of the man crowned The King of Rock ’n’ Roll. Center Stage captures Elvis’ undeniable physical appeal and unrivaled artistic brilliance as it explores the time between his first TV appearance in 1956 to one of his very last concerts.

The Man and The Music offers glimpses into Elvis’ private life and the difficult realities of his unprecedented fame. Featured are rare home movies of Elvis’ friends and family as well as his first recording, a song called “My Happiness” that he recorded at Sun Studios as a gift for his mother. From the Waist Up, narrated by U2’s Bono, follows Elvis’ remarkable trajectory to stardom, from unknown singer to icon in just 12 months. Featured are many of Elvis’ TV performances culminating with his legendary appearance on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” Other featured performances include “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Don’t Be Cruel,” “All Shook Up,” and “Return To Sender.” The collection’s bonus features include interviews with Elvis Presley band members Scotty Moore & D.J. Fontana, Sun Records founder Sam Phillips, and Elvis contemporaries Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins.

Newly upgraded from standard definition (720x480, 4x3) to high definition video (1920x1080, 16x9) and digitally enhanced for image clarity and stabilization, three popular “Ed Sullivan Show” collections for The Beatles, The Supremes and The Temptations will also be released:

The 4 Complete Ed Sullivan Shows Starring The Beatles collects the four entire episodes of “The Ed Sullivan Show” with history-making performances by The Beatles on two DVDs. On February 9, 1964, The Beatles stepped onto Ed Sullivan’s stage to make their U.S. TV debut. 73 million Americans tuned in and “Beatlemania” exploded. In these unforgettable live shows from 1964 and 1965, The Beatles performed 20 songs, including the Number One hits “She Loves You,” “I Want To Hold Your Hand,” “Ticket To Ride,” “Yesterday,” “Help!,” “I Saw Her Standing There,” and “All My Loving.”

The Best Of The Supremes On The Ed Sullivan Show presents 22 of the Motown legends’ greatest performances on the program on one DVD. Included is The Supremes’ first appearance on “The Ed Sullivan Show” in December 1964, which featured a performance of their Number One hit “Come See About Me.” Other timeless performances are showcased, including “You Can’t Hurry Love,” “Love Child” and “The Happening.” This collection also includes “Up The Ladder To The Roof” from the only appearance on the show by the “New Supremes” after Diana Ross went on to a solo career.

The Best Of The Temptations On The Ed Sullivan Show spotlights The Temptations’ best performances on the program on one DVD. Included is the group’s debut appearance from May 1967, in which they performed a medley of hits, including “My Girl” and “(I Know) I’m Losing You.” The collections’ other featured performances include the group’s Number One hit “I Can’t Get Next To You,” a playful version of “You’ve Made Me So Very Happy,” the Top Ten hit “Psychedelic Shack,” and the 1969 hit single “Runaway Child, Running Wild” with Dennis Edwards replacing David Ruffin. The Temptations’ final 1971 performance on “The Ed Sullivan Show” is also included, broadcast just a few months before the show went off the air, for which they performed “Get Ready” and their Number One hit “Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me).”
